Steve Gokool

Tenor

Name

Canadian born tenor Steve Gokool, has been captivating audiences in North America and Europe with his intrinsically warm, beautiful, and powerful voice. Known for his interpretive skills, he recently made his operatic debut with Ottawa Pocket Opera in the role of Canio in Pagliacci, where he was described as ‘…convincing, with impressive power…’ (National Capital Opera Society). This November he makes his debut with Center Stage Opera as Alfredo in La Traviata, Other recent credits include Dottore Caius Falstaff, Monostatos Magic Flute, and Papa Gonzales Summer and Smoke. Future engagements include Il Trovatore (Manrico), La Traviata (Alfredo), Macbeth (Macduff), and Pagliacci (Canio).

Previous credits include Le nozze di Figaro (Don Basilio/Don Curzio) and Hin und Zurück (Robert) at the University of Toronto, Hansel and Gretel (The Witch) with the Royal Conservatory of Music, Giulio Cesare (Sesto) at the University of New Mexico, and La Fiesta de la Posada (Wise Man). Scene work includes Carmen (Don Jose), Carousel (Billy), L’Elisir D’Amore (Nemorino), Fidelio (Jaquino), Der Freischütz (Max), Otello (Otello), Rigoletto (Duke), Tosca (Cavaridossi), and La Traviata (Alfredo). 

Though his passion lies with opera, Steve enjoys performing varied styles of vocal repertoire, particularly art song, oratorio, and musical theater. His operetta credits include The Gondoliers (Luiz), The Yeomen of the Guard (Col. Fairfax), and The Pirates of Penzance (Pirate King) with the Alexander Singers. His solo concert credits include Orff’s Carmina Burana, Händel’s Judas Maccabeaus, and Messiah, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle, Schubert’s Mass in G, Brahm’s Liebeslieder, Mozart’s Requiem, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, and Britten’s Serenade for Tenor and Horn.

Currently residing in New York City, Steve has studied with Maitland Peters, Marylin Tyler, Jean MacPhail, and Angela Hawaleshka. He has his B.A. in Voice Performance from the University of Toronto, his Masters in Voice and Conducting from the University of New Mexico, and most recently, his Professional Studies Certificate in Voice from the Manhattan School of Music.
