David Duke

Baritone

David Duke

David has been active in music for many years, as a singer, conductor, music director, composer/songwriter and teacher. He sings with Main Line Opera Guild in performances at nursing homes and senior living facilities, and was recently featured with them on their fundraiser for Stage One in Media, Pennsylvania (scenes from La Boheme, La Traviata and Il Trovatore), and as Don Alfonso in Cosi fan tutte. He has appeared in the title role in Don Giovanni (Rome Festival Opera – Rome, Italy), as Escamillo in Carmen (University of Illinois Opera Theater – Urbana, IL), Pooh Bah in The Mikado (a role he will reprise in the Fall of 2017 with Rose Valley Chorus and Orchestra – Wallingford, PA), Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus (Williamsport Symphony – Williamsport, PA) and as the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz with the Cape Fear Regional Theater (Fayetteville, NC). Additional credits include Ravenal understudy/ensemble in Show Boat (Media Theater – Media, PA) and First Priest in The Magic Flute (Opera Southwest – Albuquerque, NM).

David has appeared in concert with the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra in selections from musical theater. He has also performed in choirs, including the Mendelssohn Chorale, which performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra (Lord of the Rings – The Two Towers), The Opera Company of Philadelphia (Le Nozze di Figaro, Tosca) and with the Philadelphia Singers Chorale (Lament for Yitschak) with the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Kurt Boehm.

For the past three years, David has directed and conducted performances of Handel’s Messiah with the Philadelphia Stake Choir (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) and in 2016 conducted a select choir for the dedication of the LDS Temple in Philadelphia. He has also been music director at Fayetteville Technical Community College – Fayetteville, NC), for shows including Oklahoma, The Music Man, Anything Goes, Fiddler on the Roof and Guys and Dolls.

Teaching positions David has held include Assistant Professor of Voice/Music at Methodist College (Fayetteville, NC), Assistant Professor of Voice at Eastern New Mexico University (Portales, NM), as well as teaching positions at Lycoming College (Williamsport, PA) and Lock Haven University (Lock Haven, PA). At Eastern New Mexico University, David directed and conducted students in a production of Dido and Aeneas.

David’s formal training includes undergraduate studies at Brigham Young University (Provo, UT, B.M. Music Education), and graduate studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana – Champaign (M. M. and D.M.A. in Vocal Performance). His voice teachers and coaches include Sylvia Stone, Richard Kennedy, Kurt Klippstatter, Eric Dalheim and John Wustman.

Originally from Orem, Utah, David currently lives in Philadelphia, PA, with his wife, two of his children, and a cat, and tries to see his oldest daughter and two grandchildren as often as possible.
