Baritone Charles Sanford began singing as a child in church choirs and in high school rock bands and other music groups. From there he went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee where he began his vocal studies in earnest and actually started his singing career as a tenor. Later he was to focus on vocal pedagogy and performance for his music degree at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey.
Since then he has performed with the New Jersey Opera Festival, the Sarasota Opera, Orlando Opera, Lyric Opera Cleveland, Central City Opera and has been involved with many collaborations from art song to sacred music with churches and orchestras around the country.
He has sung leading roles in Die Fledermaus, La Boheme, La Fanciulla del West, L’heure espangnole, La Cantarina, L’incoronazione di Poppea, Amahi and the Night Visitors as well as Into the Woods, Yeomen of the Guard and HM.S. Pinafore. His oratorio performances as a soloist have included Handel’s Messiah as well as Bach’s Magnificat and Christmas Oratorio.
Most recently he has been seen in the title role of Rigoletto with the Regina Opera Company and as Schaunard in La Boheme with Amato Opera Company. In February and March he can be seen as Dr. Malatesta in Don Pasquale, also with Amato, and returns to Regina in May to sing Il Conte di Luna in their production of Il Trovatore.
He currently resides in New York City where he continues to pursue his singing career and further his vocal studies with voice teacher Tom LoMonaco.
